The mission hospital
was started towards the end of the 19th centaury. The region was
very backward. Poverty, illiteracy, backwardness, belief in which
craft and evil sprits was the order of the day. Diseases like
typhoid, Malaria, flue were very common and took a heavy toll due
to having almost no facilities for medical treatment. Occasionally
plague and Cholera came in epidemic form. In the year 1880 plague
was so severe that people abandoned this houses an lived in tents
in nearly open grounds. The rat population had increased
tremendously and it became almost impossible to check the spread
of the disease. It is said that there were no men available to
lift and dispose off the dead bodies and the whole town wore a
deserted look.
The hospital was started to treat the patients who came in large
numbers to avail the facility.
The most prominent name which is still fondly remembered is that
of Dr. Jennie Grant who worked as the medical superintendent for
about 56 years. The lady had amazing strength and devotion for
duty. By using indigenous medicines and herbs she was able to give
free treatment to the patients. Preaching the word of God to
patients ad relatives was customary. For want of Doctors and
finances the hospital has lagged behind and does not compare
favorable with other modern hospitals. However still the hospital
continues to give cheap treatment and is well known for maternity
and large numbers of deliveries are done at low cost. |
